Cavs claim VCU Shootout

The No. 21 Virginia men's golf team captured the VCU Shootout in record-setting fashion this weekend by posting a program-best 27-under 837 at Hermitage Country Club.

After shooting a blazing 10-under 728 during yesterday's final round, Virginia ran away from the 15-team field and bested runner-up East Carolina by seven strokes.

Senior Ben Kohles and freshman Denny McCarthy paced the Cavaliers and tied for fourth individually with 8-under finishes. The two torched the course Sunday afternoon with scores of 65 and 66, respectively, to vault Virginia from fifth place to a 36-hole lead.

The Cavaliers refused to relinquish that advantage, riding junior Mac McLaughin's 5-under round yesterday. McLaughin's score of 67 was his lowest at Virginia and knotted him with Cavalier senior Bruce Woodall at 11th place.

After kicking off their fall season with a win, the Cavaliers return to tournament play Oct. 14-16 at The Ridges.
