Jenkins, Uriguen shine

During its fall debut, the Virginia men's tennis team saw several of its members collect personal victories at the U.Va. Ranked+1 Invitational in Charlottesville this past weekend. The three-day event featured 48 athletes from 11 different programs, including 14 nationally ranked players.

No. 18 junior Jarmere Jenkins, who edged the field during last month's Purnell-Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament, triumphed in the Orange Singles slate. Jenkins downed Illinois senior Roy Kalmanovich 6-2, 6-2 during Sunday's finale after overcoming foes from Radford, Louisville and East Tennessee State.

Jenkins also teamed up with junior Julen Uriguen to nab the title in the orange doubles draw. The Virginia pair plowed through a Radford team and advanced further because of a Virginia Commonwealth default before squaring off against Maryland's senior Maros Horny and junior John Collins. Jenkins and Uriguen snuck past their ACC rivals by a 9-8 margin in the match to claim victory.

Virginia will now prepare for the ITA All-American Championships scheduled to begin Oct. 1 in Tulsa, Okla.
