The No. 21 Virginia men's soccer team continued its recent offensive barrage by taking 19 shots against in-state rival Virginia Tech Friday, but sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Renfro stonewalled the Cavaliers en route to a 0-0 double overtime draw. Virginia freshman goalie Spencer LaCivita and Renfro posted matching shutouts with six and seven saves, respectively, as neither offensive unit could manage a go-ahead goal in 110 minutes of action.
Two 10-minute overtime sessions produced quality chances and tense moments for both squads but no game-winner. Virginia (9-5-1, 3-2-1 ACC) dominated its previous opponent, Howard, with a 30-2 shot advantage but led only 19-14 in the category against the Hokies (4-9-2, 1-4-1).
The best chance for either team to score came during the 65th minute when junior forward Will Bates took a penalty shot for the Cavaliers following a handball in the box by a Virginia Tech player, but Renfro denied the 14-goal scorer from the spot.
Virginia now sits fourth in the ACC with the point it gained from the tie. The Cavaliers have two conference matches remaining as they try to secure a top-four conference finish to earn a first-round home game in the ACC Tournament.
