Knouse hat trick highlights 8-1 romp

The Virginia field hockey team earned a much-needed win in impressive fashion yesterday by defeating UC Davis 8-1 in Spring City, Pa.

Sophomore forward Elly Buckley opened the scoring during the second minute. The captain's score was followed quickly by a fifth-minute goal from sophomore forward Hadley Bell.

The Aggies (2-7, 1-1 NorPac) responded when junior defender Lydia Brambila broke through seconds later to tighten the game.

Virginia (6-7, 0-2 ACC) fired off 14 first-half shots to UC Davis' six and controlled much of the action. Junior forward Britt Knousec scored in the 16th minute and sophomore midfielder Carissa Vittese and Buckley padded the lead for a 5-1 Cavalier advantage at the half.

The second half belonged to Virginia as well, and the team did not let up its punishing offensive attack. Knouse scored a second goal during the 38th minute and finished her hat trick 10 minutes later off an assist from freshman forward Rachel Sumfest. Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Alexandra Jahnle notched her first goal of the season to cap a dominating Cavalier win. Virginia almost doubled the Aggies with 21 shots and also held the advantage in penalty corners.
