The Virginia field hockey returned from College Park, Md. this weekend without a victory as No. 3 Maryland proved to be too much to handle in 6-3 loss Friday.
The Cavaliers (5-7, 0-2 ACC) opened the scoring with a goal during the 15th minute off the stick of freshman forward Rachel Sumfest, who notched her fourth goal of the season. Maryland (10-1, 3-0 ACC) answered quickly, however, scoring off a shot from junior midfielder Megan Frazer during the 20th minute. Frazer added another goal during the 29th minute before senior midfielder Jemma Buckley tallied a score during the 32nd minute to give the defending national champions a 3-1 lead. Jemma's younger sister, Virginia sophomore forward Elly Buckley, netted a goal just two minutes later to send the game into half at 3-2.
Maryland came out aggressively during the second half, scoring in the 52nd minute off a second goal from the elder Buckley and once again during the 65th minute to extend the lead to 5-2. Freshman midfielder Jess Orrett cut the Terrapins' lead to two, but Maryland managed to register an insurance goal before the end of the half to seal the 6-3 win. Overall, Maryland outshot Virginia 9-3 during the second half.
Virginia continues its road stint this weekend as it faces off against UC Davis, Princeton and Connecticut.
