Cavaliers earn recognition

Two Virginia athletes gained recognition yesterday for their on-field contributions to their respective teams. Senior punter Jimmy Howell received a nomination for the Ray Guy Award - an honor that goes to the nation's top punter - while sophomore forward Elly Buckley nabbed a selection to the 2011 All-ACC Field Hockey Team.

Howell, who is up for the Ray Guy accolade with 54 other punters, currently ranks No. 5 in the ACC with an average of 39.6 yards per kick. He has pinned the Cavaliers' opponents within the 20-yard line on nearly one-third of his punts. Howell will learn if he makes the 10-person short-list for the honor Nov. 11.

Buckley, meanwhile, earned the distinction of being the only Cavalier nominated for the All-ACC team. The Aussie standout, who also claimed the honor last season, spearheaded the Virginia attack this season with a team-high 15 goals and nine assists and consistently ranked near the top of ACC in terms of scoring.
