The No. 8 Virginia women's soccer team's season came to a close last Friday as the squad bowed out of postseason play with a 3-0 loss against No. 6 Florida State in an NCAA quarterfinal matchup.
The Cavaliers (17-5-2, 7-2-1 ACC), who outscored their first three NCAA Tournament opponents by a 9-0 margin, failed to score a single goal against the resilient Seminole back line despite holding a slight advantage in shots.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles (18-6-1, 5-5-0), who also knocked Virginia out of the ACC Tournament earlier this month, capitalized on the few opportunities they had against senior goalkeeper Chantel Jones - the NCAA all-time leader in shutouts. Junior midfielder Ines Jaurena jumpstarted Florida State's three-goal onslaught as she slipped a penalty kick past Jones during the 35th minute to give her team a one-goal lead heading into intermission.
After the stoppage, freshman midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir and redshirt junior forward Tiffany McCarty each found the back of the net again to give the Seminoles a commanding 3-0 lead. The Cavaliers made a strong push to overcome the daunting deficit, but time ultimately ran out on the group's impressive season.
The loss marked the final career games for Jones, forward Lauren Alwine, defender Amanda Fancher, defender Maggie Kistner and defender Katie Starsia.
