Sophomore Justin Shane captured the singles title and contributed to the doubles title win for the Virginia men's tennis team at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Championship in Bradenton, Fla. this past weekend.
During the Cavaliers' first tournament of the season, which took place on brown clay, Shane claimed a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 singles victory against Oklahoma State senior Vlad Bondarenko. Shane, ranked 82nd in the nation, also defeated No. 93 Duke sophomore Fred Saba in the quarterfinals and upset 12th-ranked Ole Miss senior Marcel Thiemann in the semis.
In doubles, Shane teamed with senior Philippe Oudshoorn for a 9-8 comeback victory in the finals against Alabama sophomores Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga. After surviving three match points at 7-8, the Virginia tandem powered through the final two games to secure the sweep for the Cavaliers.
A weekend after freshman Mitchell Frank won the ITA National Individual Indoor Championships, the tournament concluded the team's fall season and a terrific 2011 for coach Brian Boland, who last week earned Coach of the Year honors from the Virginia Chapter of the United States Tennis Association.
