Spring fashion marches on

Top designers offer playful designs, melt away winter blues

Thankfully. spring is almost here. And that means it is time to "spring clean" our wardrobes. Get ready, everyone. It's in with the new trends and out with the old. This spring expect flowery prints and bold colors - but never at the same time - paired with simple, understated outfits.

Chic tops matched with clean-cut shorts or skirts, simple dresses to welcome the summery spring days, and the key piece of almost every runway show, the jumpsuit, are definitely the highlights of what you should be wearing this season.

Whether in different pale blues simply threaded together in high-waisted skirts as seen in Rag & Bone's spring 2012 collection, or in spring flowers blooming loudly on a daring jumpsuit (Alexander Wang 2012), whimsical feminine styles are in this season.

But pastels do not dominate this season's couture. Alexander Wang also mixed darker colors such as mauve and black with leather fabric, creating looks for those chillier spring days.

Similarly, Derek Lam's show featured darker colors, again in leather. The Derek Lam spring runway featured sheath dresses, perfect for both spring and summer breezes. Patterned lace dresses, paired with leather jackets in mustard yellows, also made an appearance as light wear, meant to combat the spring chills in those early April days. Lam showcased loud, bright colors on many of his dresses, nicely offsetting the many white pieces featured in his collection. White is always in - as long as you have a decent enough tan to sport it. If you haven't gone on a tropical spring break vacation, wait until the beginning of June to start wearing white.

Also, daring colors are in this season, featured prominently in the Marc By Marc Jacobs show. Fiery oranges and reds splash across his famous spring runway show on dresses, pantsuits and jackets alike. I personally liked his peach top with navy shorts combo. Paired with some white or nude wedges, a statement bracelet and some big black sunglasses, this is the perfect outfit to go sightseeing at your favorite spring break destination - Playa del Carmen, anyone? Predictably, the show also included a jumpsuit in a deep navy blue. Simple but eye-catching, you have to make sure that you wear the jumpsuit, and not the other way around.

Jumpsuits with bolder geometric and flowery prints were also featured in Gwen Stefani's successful couture line L.A.M.B. L.A.M.B. also provided tons of colors perfect for taking some serious fashion risks - a neon blue top with green statement pants, for instance. No, they're not for a rave - this spring, you could wear this on any day bright enough to match your clothes.

Armed with this information, you are ready to take some serious risks this spring. So pull out your credit cards and start doing some damage.
