A Tel Aviv University study released earlier this month suggests eating a small dessert with breakfast can help people lose weight in the long run.
Researchers divided overweight participants into two groups. The first group ate a 300-calorie breakfast each day while the second group ate a 600-calorie breakfast, which was high in protein and carbohydrates. The 600-calorie breakfast also included a dessert. Although both groups initially lost weight, the latter group maintained weight loss after 32 weeks while the former often regained lost pounds.
Participants in the 600-calorie breakfast group had lost an average of 40 lbs more per person than their counterparts.
Researchers said participants in the 600-calorie breakfast group may have followed their diets more effectively later in the day because the larger breakfast had reduced their gherlin levels. Gherlin is a hormone which stimulates hunger and cravings. Participants who ate a larger breakfast may have had lower gherlin levels. By eating a large breakfast which included a chocolate dessert, participants had fewer cravings during the day, and so managed to eat less and maintain weight loss.
