Following an important tournament win last weekend, the No. 6 Virginia women's tennis team comes home to take on in-state rival No. 42 Virginia Commonwealth University today.
The Cavaliers (7-2, 2-0 ACC) look to build on their momentum after reaching their highest ranking in program history this week.
"I've got to give a lot of credit to our players," coach Mark Guilbeau said of his team's 4-3 victory against No. 25 Alabama to sweep the Blue/Gray Classic. "The top four [players] especially hunkered down and did a great job. It all came down to a set with the whole team watching Hana [Tomljanovic]."
During Sunday's final, Virginia rallied after dropping the doubles point to beat the in-state favorite Crimson Tide. Virginia relied on strong singles play, especially from No. 17 senior Emily Fraser at first singles. Fraser scored a big win against No. 21 Mary Anne Macfarlane to help seal the victory. Fraser was named ACC Player of the Week Tuesday for the second time this season. Fraser's performance is the latest in an accomplished season - she has lost only one match and is steadily ascending the national rankings.
