The No. 22 Virginia men's golf team looks to capture its first ever title in team competition at tomorrow's ACC Tournament in New London, N.C., while No. 11 senior golfer and two-time ACC Player of the Year Ben Kohles aims to record his first ever individual conference tournament championship.
After winning two tournaments in March to bring his Virginia all-time career total to seven, Kohles earned ACC Co-Player of the Month honors. He enters as one of the two-day tournament's favorites, along with No. 9 Julian Suri of Duke, No. 14 James White of Georgia Tech and No. 16 Brooks Koepka of Florida State. No Cavalier has ever won an ACC Tournament, although Will Collins placed second in 2010. Kohles finished eight last year.
Virginia comes off a solid spring campaign and has enjoyed recent success in the conference tournament. Although the Cavaliers have won no tournaments this season, they have yet to finish a tournament outside the top 10, despite playing against top-line competition. Virginia ranks behind only No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 18 Duke and No. 19 Clemson among in-conference squads.
Freshman Denny McCarthy has emerged as a dependable number two to Kohles. Sophomore Benjamin Rusch, senior Bruce Woodall and freshman Ji Soo Park round out Virginia's top five.
The Cavaliers tee off in the second group alongside Maryland and Duke at 9:10 a.m.
