Virginia prepares for ACC Championships one week away

The No. 1 Virginia rowing team will take on eight teams this weekend at the U.Va. Invitational on the waters of Lake Monticello. The competition will serve as a final tune-up before next week's ACC Championships.

The Cavaliers are coming off a strong performance at the San Diego Crew Classic two weeks ago which included a victory by the first varsity four team of junior coxswain Molly Frear, senior Ruth Retzinger, sophomore Kaity McCullough, sophomore Elle Murray and freshman Chandler Lally.

No. 18 Clemson, the host of this year's ACC Championships, is among the visiting teams. The others include three ranked squads - No. 14 Cornell, No. 15 Michigan State and No. 19 Minnesota.

Saturday, the Cavaliers will race the Spartans, Golden Gophers and Notre Dame. The teams will go head-to-head in the first and second varsity eight, first and second varsity four and novice eight races.

Earlier this week, senior Martha Kuzzy, junior Kristine O'Brien and sophomore Brandy Herald were selected to take part in the Women's U23 National Team Camp to compete for spots on the roster going to the World Championships in July. Kuzzy will be honored Saturday along with 19 other seniors as they race at home for the final time.
