Game Preview: No. 1 Virginia hosts Hokies

Cavs have dominated series vs. cross-state adversaries

What: No. 1 Virginia (18-0-0, 12-0-0 ACC) vs. No. 5 Virginia Tech (14-2-2, 9-2-1 ACC)

Where: Klöckner Stadium

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

The Skinny: Looking to stay perfect, the No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer team will close out the regular season against rival No. 5 Virginia Tech Thursday. The Hokies, who suffered their second loss of the season to No. 3 Florida State last week, bounced back with a 1-0 win against Miami. Virginia Tech’s leading scorers are freshman forward Murielle Tiernan and sophomore midfielder Ashley Meier, who have each recorded eight goals.

Virginia has held its opponents scoreless in the past five games. Sophomore defender Emily Sonnett was honored as ACC Women’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week, a recognition of her contribution to the Cavaliers’ outstanding defensive effort against Florida State last weekend.

The Cavaliers own the all-time series 16-2-1 and stormed to a 5-0 victory a year ago in Blacksburg.
