Just ‘Do You’

Fourth-year Commerce student writes book to inspire others

Though he’s still in his undergraduate career at the University, fourth-year Commerce student Ajamu Kambon is already a successful author and entrepreneur. Last March, he published his first book, titled “Do You,”which proposes happiness and mental wellness as a path to entrepreneurial success.

“‘Do You’ is all about being yourself and enriching one’s life in and out of college,” Kambon said. “[It] speaks a lot about U.Va, its culture and the value it brings to its students.”

Though he hopes people find the book helpful, Kambon said one of its best features is its entertainment value.

“You’ll definitely get a few laughs,” he said. “If you learn nothing else, I made you laugh and that’s enough for me.”

There’s also a wealth of knowledge behind Kambon’s writing. During the winter break of his second year, Kambon participated in a program called “Market Insights to Southeast Asia,” where he and other Commerce students travelled to Asia to study businesses and meet University alumni who live and work in the region.

“Travel gave me more perspective,” Kambon said. “I saw how they deal with life and incorporated that with my own perspective.”

Kambon continued to pursue his business interests by taking an internship on Wall Street the following summer. After this experience, he said, he was motivated to start his book.

“What made me write this book is wanting to leave behind something that can teach other people,” Kambon said. “I want to give someone something of value.”

In addition to his book, Kambon has also been involved in other business endeavors at the University, such as Moocho, a mobile app that allows you to pay for food on and off Grounds, and Lavish Productions, a venue promotion and event planning company.

“As an entrepreneur, there’s no limit on what you can do,” Kambon said. “You’re always on different paths and different journeys — never know what you want to do until you’re doing it.”
