In its final action of the fall season, the Virginia women’s golf team finished ninth in an 18-team field at the Landfall Tradition tournament in Wilmington, N.C. Junior Briana Mao led the way with a 22nd overall finish.

The Cavaliers started off well in Friday’s opening round, as senior Portland Rosen fired a 1-over 73 to finish in seventh place and help the team into sixth place. Sophomore Lauren Coughlin, freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi and Mao each finished in the top 50 after one day with scores of 76, 78 and 79, respectively. No. 14 Alabama sat in first place with a combined 285, 10 strokes ahead of second-place No. 4 Duke.

Rosen paced the Cavaliers again Saturday, carding a team-best 76, but the Cavaliers slipped to seventh place overall. Diaz-Yi and Mao each shot lower than their opening score, but the team slipped five strokes behind Wake Forest in the standings. Alabama senior Stephanie Meadow held her spot atop the individual leaderboard with a 1-under 71.

Mao made a big move in Sunday’s final round, shooting a 1-under 71 to vault from 45th place to 22nd place. Her score was the team’s best and moved her above Rosen overall, as the senior shot a Sunday 79 to finish 27th overall. Despite her success, Virginia fell to ninth overall, finishing one stroke behind Oklahoma State. Meadow continued her stellar play for Alabama, winning the individual title by two strokes, and the Crimson Tide held on for an eight-stroke team win against Duke.

The Virginia women are not in action again until mid-February, when they head to Tallahassee, Florida for their first spring tournament.
