Cavaliers continue strong fall season

Virginia swimmers, divers break multiple school, conferece records in Ohio

The Virginia swim and dive teams broke seven school records and three conference records at the Ohio State Invite last weekend.

After leading while going into the final day of competition, the No. 11 Virginia women’s team finished second with a score of 1,095 in a nail biter to No. 5 Florida, who scored 1,099. No. 20 Ohio State finished third, scoring 616.5, followed by Purdue and Kentucky at 571.5 and 418, respectively.

The No. 9 Virginia men’s team finished third with a score of 801.5. No. 13 Ohio State won the men’s meet, scoring 1,137 points, sneaking past No. 5 Florida, who scored 1090.5. Kentucky at 476 and Purdue at 133 rounded out the rest of the men’s competition.

The women’s team accounted for nine of the 10 records Virginia broke at the match. Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew set both the school and ACC records in the 100-meter backstroke on Saturday and the 200-meter backstroke on Sunday. Both times were automatic NCAA-qualifying marks. Freshman Laura Simon set the school record in the 100-meter breaststroke and the school and conference records in the 200-meter breaststroke.

In addition, freshman Leah Smith set the school record for the 500-meter freestyle while junior Ellen Williamson set the school record for the 200-meter IM. In total, the women won four of the 21 events on the weekend.

Junior diver JB Kolod continued his record-setting season by breaking his own school record on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 383.95. Kolod has now broken his own school records on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard this season.

Kolod’s record marked the only event win for the men’s team. But the team did have strong showings from sophomore Luke Papendick, who finished second in both the 100 and 200 meter backstroke, and the 400-meter medley relay team — consisting of senior Jack Murfee, sophomore Yannick Kaeser, junior Kyle Dudzinski and senior Parker Camp — also finished second.

Virginia’s next meet is Jan. 17-18, when the men face Harvard, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech and the women face Miami, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech in Christiansburg, Va.
