The Skinny: The Virginia women’s tennis team hosts the annual U.Va. Winter Invite tournament this weekend. Select Cavaliers will welcome players from Utah, Tennessee, Marshall and VCU in an individual event that will not count toward the teams’ overall records.
The Cavaliers started their 2014 season this week with a 5-2 win at No. 40 William & Mary.
The VCU women’s team, led by sophomore Cindy Chala — last year’s Atlantic 10 Player of the Year — will participate in their own invitational Friday before heading to Charlottesville. Their matches against Georgetown and Campbell will be their first of the season. Utah, Tennessee and Marshall will start the season in Charlottesville.
No 58. Utah and Marshall look to make the NCAA tournament this year after missing out last year, while the others look to improve from last year’s tournament result. No. 39 VCU and No. 31 Tennessee met in the first round of last year’s NCAA tournament, with Tennessee advancing to the second round.
