Virginia swim and dive brought its season to a close Saturday with a 26th place finish at the Men’s NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers scored 23 points, the sixth most among all ACC teams. The finish marked a slight improvement from last season’s NCAA meet, where Virginia finished 27th with 22 points.
Junior diver JB Kolod — who earned honorable mention All-American honors at last season’s NCAA meet — provided the highlights of the Virginia weekend. Kolod placed an impressive 23rd in the 1-meter diving event Thursday, but it was the next two days that proved most memorable.
On Friday, Kolod placed seventh on the 3-meter boards with a score of 376.85, earning All-American honors and becoming the first Cavalier diver to qualify for a championship final at the NCAA Championships. Kolod followed that performance by finishing 10th in the platform diving consolation finals Saturday, with a score just half a point below the school record.
Sophomore Yannick Kaeser notched two top-20 finishes in his two events, placing 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday and 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday. Kaeser’s preliminary time of 1:53.71 for the 200-yard breaststroke broke the existing Virginia school record.
In the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Luke Papendick earned honorable mention All-American honors for the second straight year. He placed 14th in the event, and placed 28th in the 100-yard backstroke.
The meet concluded coach Augie Busch’s first season as Virginia’s head coach, as well marking the final collegiate event for four Cavalier seniors — Jan Daniec, Brad Phillips, Nathan Hart and Jack Murfee.
