Sophomore striker Caleigh Foust registered a goal and an assist in the loss to the Buckeyes.

Two days after knocking off No. 1 North Carolina on the road, the No. 3 Virginia field hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime Sunday afternoon at home against Ohio State. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ (10-3, 4-0 ACC) nine-game winning streak, a run which included several wins against top-15 teams.

Despite being 0-6 against ranked teams entering Sunday, the Buckeyes (4-7, 0-3 Big Ten) did not appear at all intimidated out of the gates, notching the game’s first goal at 14:27. The Cavaliers tied it at 1-1 just more than six minutes later on sophomore striker Riley Tata’s 10th tally of the season, and the score remained there until halftime.

Five minutes into the second period, sophomore striker Caleigh Foust put in her 10th goal of the year to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 edge. Virginia held that lead for 17 minutes, until Ohio State freshman midfielder Morgan Kile found the back of the net in the 58th minute.

Freshman midfielder Tara Vittese became the third Cavalier to get her 10th goal on the season during the game when she scored a few minutes later, but with fewer than five minutes left in the game, Buckeye freshman forward Annabel Sams tied it up on an unassisted shot to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Ohio State earned a 4-1 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior back Emma Royce converted on the fourth corner just fewer than 11 minutes in to give the Buckeyes their highest-ranked win under coach Anne Wilkinson, who is currently in her 19th season.

Virginia returns to the pitch Friday afternoon at Richmond looking to bounce back from the loss, its first since Sept. 4.
