Lights’ “Little Machines” electrifies

Newest album from the Canadian artist showcases her talent and creativity

Canadian singer-songwriter Lights is hot on the trails of her latest studio album, “Little Machines.” With three albums now under her belt, the 27-year-old has proven herself a consistent musical artist.

Lights exudes not only considerable talent, but a sense of authenticity in artistic choices, a soft yet forceful voice, an endearing stage presence and a recognizable style. Lights establishes herself as an artist to watch.

On “Little Machines,” Lights explores a different sound than what was previously showcased on 2009’s “The Listening” and 2011’s “Siberia.” In her debuts, Lights presents an electronic-indie sound, wispy soaring vocals and penchant for ridiculously catchy choruses. “The Listening” was thematically light, however, while “Siberia” was quite the opposite. “Little Machines,” then, is the perfect blend of both sides of her musical personality. This album represents a return to the classic electronic sound from her first album, packaged with the lyrical maturity of her second.

Lyricism is definitely Lights’ strong suit. Her choruses are always as perfectly crafted as her verses; each line is carefully created and brings something of value. In one of the undeniably best tracks, “Oil and Water,” she sings on the chorus: “And we separate / Nothing is the same forever / See you drive away / Wish I could make you stay / Oil, oil and water.”

Though her metaphor in this ballad is not exposing a wonderfully rich topic, Lights’ charm and illustrious voice makes even the most tried of subjects thoroughly engaging.

Lights’ vocals, meanwhile, have never been a matter of contention. She has proven time and time again she not only can sing, but can but do so with passion and authenticity. In “Speeding” we get a sense of her range, and songs like “Portal” exemplify her ability naturally emote.

Lights seems to have perfected both her craft and style with “Little Machines.” A true example of talent and artistic poise, Lights will remain a true beacon of talent for all artists in her corner of the industry.
