University spokesperson McGregor McCance will assume the role of Senior Director Of University Relations within the Office of University Communications starting this week. Anthony de Bruyn will now serve as the primary University spokesperson.
Assistant Chief Communications Officer Luke Anderson said the changes were based on the skill sets and interest of members of our staff.
“Following the retirement of our Director of Community Relations in June 2014, we took the opportunity to reconsider roles and responsibilities related to our Community Relations efforts,” he said in an email.
McCance will now oversee U.Va. Today and provide general oversight of the University's responses to Freedom of Information Act requests. de Bruyn will oversee Community Relations in his role as spokesperson.
“Essentially, we put Community Relations into the portfolio of the University spokesperson and slightly shifted responsibilities accordingly,” Anderson said.
McCance said the changes were also part of the ongoing review of the office.
“It’s just something that puts us in position to take advantage of our experience and strengths and our interests too,” he said. “[It puts] people in the positions they’ll enjoy the most.”
McCance will be responsible for developing the University's media strategy.
“My new is role is to work directly with the Media Relations team to find out and tell stories at the University,” he said.
No salary changes will come with the restructured positions.
