The Virginia men’s golf team opened its spring season last week with a fifth-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Kauai, Hawaii. The No. 15 Cavaliers shot 13-over 877, including three-under 285 in Friday’s finale, to conclude the 54-hole, 17-team event 25 strokes back of five-time defending champion California.
Virginia carded a three-over 291 in Wednesday’s opening round, when the No. 23 Golden Bears and individual champion redshirt junior Shotaro Ban set the tone for the three-day tournament with scores of six-under 288 and five-under 67.
In fifth place entering Thursday, the Cavaliers shot 13-over 301 to stand pat. Sophomore Derek Bard led Virginia in the second round at even-par 72, while senior Ji Soo Park shot two-over 74 to slide from eighth place to ninth heading into Friday.
Four of Virginia’s five golfers put up their best scores in the final round of play, but the Cavaliers could not make up a five-stroke deficit to fourth-place Texas A&M.
Park led the way for Virginia, placing eighth at 2-under 214 to pocket his fourth top-10 finish as a Cavalier. Park matched his best 54-hole collegiate tournament score while pacing Virginia in scoring for the first time since the 2013 ACC Tournament.
Bard finished two strokes behind Park at even-par 216, placing 11th, while senior All-American Denny McCarthy shot eight-over 224 to finish 37th. Freshman Danny Walker and sophomore Jimmy Stanger rounded out the scoring for Virginia, placing 43rd and 56th respectively.
Ban shot eight-under 208 to take home medalist honors.
Virginia will compete March 9-10 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, South Carolina.
