The Virginia women’s golf team shot a program-record 14-under 850 to capture the UCF Challenge at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando for its seventh-ever tournament win.
Sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi paced the No. 16 Cavaliers in their first event of the spring season, carding a 9-under 207 to take home medalist honors along with Vanderbilt junior Jennifer Hahn.
Diaz-Yi, senior Brianna Mao, junior Lauren Coughlin and junior Elizabeth Szokol all placed in the top-20 at the three-day, seven-team event as Virginia edged Tulane by one stroke.
Mao, the 2013 champion, shot 3-under 69 on Monday and finished 11th overall.
Coughlin, meanwhile, fired a 7-under 65 on day two, breaking the Virginia 18-hole record set by Portland Rosen at the first round of the 2012 NCAA Championships. Coughlin notched eight birdies on her historic day before enduring a tough final round Tuesday to finish 14th.
Szokol came in a stroke behind Coughlin at even-par 216 for 19th place. Freshman Maho Hayakawa and junior Alex Hershberger — who competed individually — finished 76th and 34th, respectively.
The Cavaliers concluded Sunday’s opening round in third place behind Vanderbilt and Iowa State before charging into first with a team 18-hole record 13-under 275 on day two. The program’s previous top single-round score was a 279 at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Virginia entered Tuesday’s final round up three shots on Tulane before preserving the event win with a five-over 293.
The Cavaliers will compete in Florida State’s Match-Up Tournament Feb. 13-15 at Southwood Golf Course.
