Cavaliers prosper in California meets

Virginia track and field made another stride forward Friday and Saturday in California. On day one, junior Zach Herriott — the only Cavalier at the Stanford Invitational — set a personal record time of 29:08.17 seconds in the men’s 10,000 meter.

Across the bay in Berkeley, where Virginia battled Michigan and California in a tri-meet, sophomore Jordan Young shattered the school record in the men’s hammer throw. Young, a first-team All American during the indoor season, topped Vincenzo Chiariello’s 2012 mark by almost 3 meters.

Sophomore Christine Bohan also launched the 16-pound metal sphere 47.23 meters — a personal best. Bohan settled for third place behind a pair of Wolverine women.

On day two of the California/Michigan challenge, Bohan dominated the field with a hat trick of field-event victories in the javelin (43.06 meters), shot put (15.89 meters) and discus (43.58 meters). Her teammate, senior Jordan Lavender, MVP at the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships, won the women’s 200 and 400-meter, with times of 23.81 and 53.33 seconds respectively.

Lavender, junior Peyton Chaney and sophomores Andrea Wright and Tori McKenzie tacked on to the women’s total with a first-place finish — 45.44 seconds — in the 4x100-meter relay. Freshmen triple jumper Mia Barron and pole vaulter Bridget Guy each added a victory and sealed the deal. The Cavalier women finished with 143 points, surpassing No. 17 Michigan (132 points) and host California (111 points).

The men put together their own impressive performance on Saturday. Young bookended his two-day meet with a victory in the discus. Graduate student Kyle Smith took first place in the men’s javelin with a throw of 64.58 meters. Senior Payton Hazzard won the 400-meter run convincingly with a time of 46.54 seconds.

Sophomore Nathan Kiley and freshmen Logan Carrington, Cam Collins and Jack Lint ended the day with a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing in 3:14.33. Virginia couldn’t quite catch up to the Golden Bears even with all this success. The Cavalier men finished alone in second with 143.5 points, nine off California’s lead.

Virginia track and field will return to action at April 17-18 Lannigan Field.
