Seventh-seeded Virginia baseball lost to No. 3 seed Notre Dame 8-2 Friday at the ACC tournament in Durham, North Carolina. The loss dropped the Cavaliers (34-21, 15-15 ACC) to 0-2 in pool play, which eliminates the team from championship contention.
Junior Brandon Waddell started on the mound and immediately struggled with his command. The Houston, Texas native issued three walks in a one-run first inning.
In the third inning, the Fighting Irish (36-20, 17-13 ACC) parlayed a Virginia fielding miscue into two additional runs. With two outs, Waddell struck out junior Lane Richards with a pitch in the dirt, but junior catcher Robbie Coman’s throw to first base was errant, which allowed two runs to score.
Notre Dame would score twice more against Waddell in the sixth inning.
Waddell allowed six runs, four earned, over six-plus innings. The left-hander allowed seven hits, issued five walks and struck out nine batters.
The Cavaliers scored their two runs in the bottom of the third inning against Fighting Irish sophomore Ryan Smoyer. Sophomore Matt Thaiss drove home sophomore Daniel Pinero and junior Kevin Doherty, who both reached on walks, with a double.
With the victory, Notre Dame improved to 1-1 in pool action. Virginia will conclude its ACC tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. against sixth-seeded NC State.
