Virginia’s men’s golf team placed fifth in their first tournament of the fall season this past weekend, shooting 32-over par 896 at the Northern Intercollegiate tournament in Sugar Grove, Ill. Virginia took first place at the event a year ago.

The Cavaliers started the weekend off on shaky footing, shooting 16-over par 304 in their first round of play on Saturday. However, the team improved in each of its next two rounds, posting a 10-over 298 in their second round of play and finishing strong with a 6-over 294 in their final round Sunday — a team score bested only by top-ranked Illinois, who took first place in the tournament.

Sophomore Danny Walker led the way for Virginia in individual play, finishing his 36 holes at 2-over 218, placing him sixth overall. He went into Sunday’s final round in third place, but shot a 4-over 76 in his final round to drop to sixth. Other individual participants for the Cavaliers included junior Derek Bard, whose 9-over 225 was 22nd overall, as well as junior Jimmy Stanger, who placed 29th after an 11-over 227.

Coach Bowen Sargent took away both the good and the bad from last weekend’s play, expressing excitement that the team was able to come together in the later rounds.

“It was not our best week but with a young team on a championship venue, it was nice to see our guys respond in the final round,” Sargent said. “It was great to see Danny Walker have a good look at winning. With the NCAA Championships scheduled to be played here in two years, this was great preparation for Derek [Bard], Jimmy [Stanger], Danny [Walker] and Ashton [Poole].”

Besides Illinois, who finished at a 7-under 757, Virginia placed behind Purdue, UCLA, and Houston in respective order. The tournament hosted a total of 14 teams

Virginia has this weekend off and will not take the course again until the Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup Challenge from Sept. 25 to 27.
