One of the main issues with the first episode of “Supergirl” stems from Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) losing to the antagonist of the episode, Vartox (Owain Yeoman), to winning. It doesn’t make much sense. In the first fight Supergirl has with Vartox she loses, but then in the second fight, she defeats Vartox even though nothing else in story has changed.
There are also portions of the show which attempt to display aspects of feminism, namely scenes in which Kara’s boss explains why she chose the name Supergirl, and during the final fight with Vartox. There is no problem with including feminism in a television show, but the times in which it was present seemed forced.
In addition to the other issues in the pilot, there is never a real feeling of suspense even during the fight scenes. The episode lacks buildup, likely as a result of the clichéd storytelling and somewhat unconvincing acting on the part of Benoist.
The show’s first episode was very mediocre and, Supergirl pales in comparison to CW’s superhero television series “Arrow” and “The Flash,”. In order to compete with the likes of these other DC superhero television shows, Supergirl is going to have to become a lot less predictable and far more moving.
