Sophomore Chase Weaverling placed 55th as the Virginia men finished 22nd at the NCAA meet.

The Virginia cross country teams competed for NCAA team crowns Saturday afternoon at EP Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The No. 6 Cavalier women — hampered by injury — placed 15th of 31 teams for the second consecutive year, while the No. 15 Virginia men took 22nd.

Junior Cleo Boyd, sophomore Megan Rebholz and graduate student Iona Lake posted top-100 times for the ACC and Southeast Regional champion Virginia women, crossing in 68th, 76th and 92nd place, respectively. All three improved upon their performances at last year’s NCAA championships, where Boyd placed 144th, Rebholz 248th and Lake 102nd.

Following the trio were graduate student Sarah Astin and junior Maria Hauger, who came in 123rd and 176th place, respectively, out of 254 runners. Outside the Cavalier scoring five, graduate student Carly Hamilton placed 209th and freshman Emily Mulhern 247th.

Sophomore Chase Weaverling and junior Henry Wynne paced the Virginia men, clocking in just one-and-a-half seconds apart in 55th and 59th place, respectively. But the next-fastest Cavaliers — junior Thomas Madden, sophomore Brent Demarest and junior Zach Herriott — finished in the back half of the 252-runner field, taking home 150th, 166th and 171st place, respectively.

Senior Evan Chiplock and junior Adam Visokay also competed for Virginia, finishing 177th and 222nd.

Favored New Mexico grabbed the team title on the women’s side, while No. 2 Syracuse edged top-ranked Colorado for the men’s crown. Oregon junior Edward Cheserek repeated as men’s individual champion, while Notre Dame senior Molly Seidel captured the women’s individual title.

Next up for Virginia is the indoor track and field season, which begins in January.
