The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team beat Boston College on the road Saturday, 7-0, continuing the season’s successes.
From start to finish, the Cavaliers (22-1, 9-1 ACC) controlled the match against the Eagles (4-15, 0-10 ACC). In doubles, Virginia ceded just one game total — the duo of juniors Collin Altamirano and Henrik Wiersholm won 6-0, while seniors Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Alexander Ritschard won 6-1. This set the tone for the rest of the match, as each player had little trouble executing.
Sophomore Aswin Lizen played a near-perfect match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Boston College sophomore Peter Campana. Other highlights included Ritschard’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over freshman Derek Austin, and Kwiatkowski’s 6-3, 6-1 win against senior Aidan McNulty. Freshman Carl Söderlund — only a few matches back from his injury — proved that he was as healthy as ever, dominating Boston College senior Hank Workman 6-3, 6-1.
The 7-0 victory marks the sixth time in 10 competitions this season that Virginia has swept a conference opponent. It also extends the team’s winning streak to five matches. The Cavaliers now stand at second in the conference, behind only Wake Forest — the team that handed Virginia its only loss this season.
Next, the Cavaliers play their last home match at Snyder Tennis Center Tuesday against Richmond before finishing out the season with road matches against Miami and Florida State. The ACC Championship tournament begins April 26.
