Following a strong showing at the Virginia Duals, the Virginia wrestling team returned to action Friday night to face VMI (2-9) before hosting Ohio (3-4) Sunday afternoon.
Virginia opened the weekend against VMI and secured a dominant 40-5 victory in Lexington, Va. The Cavaliers won nine weight classes including two pins and seven bonus-point victories.
Junior Jake Mueller, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country at 125 pounds, recorded his fifth pin of the season and notched six early points for the Cavaliers. Redshirt sophomore Michael Murphy added another pin for Virginia at 149 pounds.
Two Cavaliers, redshirt sophomore Louie Hayes and redshirt freshman Cam Coy, delivered tech falls and three more won by major decision including sophomore Jake Keating, redshirt sophomore Jay Aiello and redshirt senior Chance McClure.
Virginia’s well-rounded effort gave the Cavaliers their third 40-point performance of the season and momentum as they returned to Memorial Gym to take on Ohio.
While the Bobcats posed a more difficult challenge for the Cavaliers, Virginia only lost three weight classes en route to another one-sided victory.
Ohio started off the dual on a positive note with redshirt junior Zac Carson, the 20th-ranked wrestler nationally at 157 pounds, edging Keating in a close bout. The Cavaliers then claimed seven straight weight classes to secure the home win.
Coy gave Virginia its first points of the day with a 5-4 decision and freshman Robert Patrick followed with a pin. McClure, Aiello, Mueller, Hayes and redshirt junior Tyler Love all added wins of their own to ice the dual.
As Virginia looks ahead to tougher opponents on its schedule, this past weekend should serve as a confidence boost for the Cavaliers.
Virginia will return to action Jan. 26 to face No. 17 North Carolina on the road.
