The No. 5 seed Virginia women’s lacrosse team (12-6, 3-4 ACC) lost to No. 4 seed Syracuse (15-3, 5-2 ACC) 12-10 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament Wednesday.

Syracuse struck first a little over three minutes into the game, but freshman midfielder Lillie Kloak equalized for Virginia with 24:04 remaining in the first half.

From that point on, Syracuse scored the game’s next seven goals to take an 8-1 lead with under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Kloak scored again to end the run, but the Orange added another goal to head into halftime with a 9-2 advantage.

In the second half, the Cavaliers finally got things going and made a comeback attempt. Virginia opened the second half with three goals in the first four minutes to cut the deficit to four. Syracuse answered with a 2-0 run, but Virginia scored two to maintain the four-goal deficit. The Orange then scored with 10:57 remaining to extend their lead to five.

The Cavaliers scored three goals in the final 10 minutes, but the lead was too much to overcome. Virginia outscored Syracuse in the second half by a score of 8-3.

Kloak and senior attacker Avery Shoemaker each recorded hat tricks for the Cavaliers. Senior midfielder Maggie Jackson, junior midfielder Sammy Mueller, sophomore midfielder Ashlyn McGovern and freshman midfielder Courtlynne Caskin all scored one goal. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell stopped 9 of 21 shots on goal from the Orange.

Syracuse junior attacker Emily Hawryschuk scored four goals in the win.

It was the second time this season that Syracuse beat Virginia, with the Orange taking the regular season meeting at home 16-11. Syracuse advances to face the top seed Boston College in the semifinals Friday.

Virginia will likely earn an at-large bid to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The selection show is on May 5, and the tournament begins May 7.
