The Walter Camp Football Foundation presented the National Defensive Player of the Week award to junior Virginia linebacker, Charles Snowden, Sunday. Snowden’s 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks set the tone for the Cavaliers’ strong second-half defensive performance Saturday night against Old Dominion at Scott Stadium. The Virginia defense posted 11 tackles for loss and 6 sacks, holding the Monarchs to only 46 total yards of offense in the second half.

The honor comes as no surprise to those who have watched Snowden develop into an elite outside linebacker over the past two years. Last season, the Silver Spring, Md. native led the nation’s linebackers with 9 pass breakups and 11 passes defended. Snowden’s size, speed and natural ball skills have made him effective as an edge rusher and in pass coverage.

Only four Virginia football players have achieved this prestigious award since 2004. The last athlete to do so was former safety Juan Thornhill in 2018, who currently plays professionally for the Kansas City Chiefs.

In addition to the rest of the Virginia defense, Snowden’s play has been crucial in the team’s undefeated 4-0 start. Next up for Snowden and the Cavaliers is their toughest opponent yet, No. 10 Notre Dame. The game is scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3:30 pm at Notre Dame Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind.
