The Virginia swimming and diving teams split their dual meet against Virginia Tech with the No. 3 women’s team dominating the Hokies 186-111 and the No. 15 men’s team narrowly falling to No. 24 Virginia Tech by a score of 158-141.

Four women led the way with two wins each for the Cavaliers as the women captured first place in 13 of the 16 events.

Freshman Kate Douglass won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.29 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.85. Senior Morgan Hill won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 22.99 and 50.35, respectively.

Sophomore Alexis Wenger captured wins in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.72 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.55. Junior Abby Richter placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.68 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.99.

The Virginia women had three others win individual swimming events. Junior Marcella Maguire won the 100-yard backstroke, senior Erin Earley placed first in the 200-yard backstroke and freshman Maddie Donohoe won the 500-yard freestyle.

On the diving board, senior Sydney Dusel won the 3-meter board by posting a career high of 373.50 — Virginia’s second all-time high score. The Cavaliers also won the 400-yard freestyle to round out the win for the women.

“Once the women got rolling, they were pretty unstoppable,” Coach Todd DeSorbo said. “We've got phenomenal depth as we had eight different women win events today.”

While the Virginia men weren’t as successful as their female teammates, the team still won six events — the wins divided amongst five individual swimmers and a relay team.

Senior Ted Schubert won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:48.69, and junior Matthew Otto finished the mile in 15:21.38 to win the event. Senior Joe Clark placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.27, junior Keefer Barnum captured a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.90 and senior Ryan Baker won the 100-yard freestyle by recording a time of 44.66.

The Cavalier men also won the 200-yard medley relay. The best-finishing men’s diver in the 3-meter board was sophomore Walker Creedon, who posted a score of 345.23 to finish second.

“The men had a very tough battle against a well-coached [Virginia Tech] team,” DeSorbo said. “The meet came down to the last few races, and unfortunately, we had a little bad luck and came up short.”

The Cavaliers will return to Charlottesville for a pair of dual meets against two ACC foes this weekend. Both teams host NC State Friday and North Carolina Saturday.
