The Charlottesville Police Department responded to a shots fired incident Sunday at 12:43 a.m. in the area of Street and West Street, per a community alert sent by Timothy Longo, chief of the University Police Department and vice president for security and safety.

No description of the subject was provided, but witnesses reported a vehicle speeding in an unknown direction following multiple shots. The CPD found shell casings in the 800 block of Hardy Drive.

This is the third community alert of the month following a robbery on Sept. 4 and a hate crime Sept. 7, when a noose was found around the neck of the Homer statue. UPD and the local Federal Bureau of Investigation are still investigating the hate crime and attempting to apprehend the perpetrator.

Community alerts are shared via email to the University community when there is timely information about a threat that can be released to the community without compromising any ongoing investigations. Timely warnings are issued when there is an ongoing threat to the community.
