Hagans ends an illustrious career at Virginia spanning decades and leaving a lasting impact as a player and coach.

Marques Hagans, Virginia football associate head coach and wide receivers coach, announced Monday that he would be leaving the program to take the wide receivers coach position at Penn State. Hagans will also serve as the offensive recruiting coordinator for the Nittany Lions.

“It has been my most gratifying honor to coach at my alma mater, the University of Virginia, over the past twelve seasons,” Hagans wrote in his statement. “Charlottesville is a special community.”

Hagans played for the Cavaliers from 2000 to 2005, starting as a wide receiver before moving over to play quarterback. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL draft and played in the league until 2010. After his time as a player ended, Hagans returned to Charlottesville as a coach, first as a graduate assistant and then as the wide receivers coach in 2013.

Hagans recruited and coached some of Virginia’s most accomplished pass-catchers in program history, including Olamide Zaccheaus, the all-time leading receiver by reception number. Seven of the top 15 all-time leaders in receptions were coached by Hagans at some point in their Virginia careers.

This marks the second departure from Coach Tony Elliott’s initial staff, with offensive line coach Garrett Tujague accepting the same position at North Carolina State in December. Elliott has experience with the position — having coached wide receivers himself at Clemson — but will need to hire a new coach before the 2023 season kicks off in the fall.
