Holland won 326 games as Virginia's head coach and just over 400 for his career.

A memorial service to honor the passing of former Virginia head coach and athletic director Terry Holland will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. The event, announced March 8, will celebrate Holland’s achievements both while in Charlottesville and beyond. This follows the coach’s passing Feb. 26 at the age of 80.

Holland coached the Cavaliers from 1974-1990 after a successful playing and coaching career at Davidson College. Compiling a 326-173 record at Virginia, he retired as the winningest men’s basketball coach in program history. Holland had massive success during his time in Charlottesville, leading the program to two NCAA Tournament Final Fours and four Elite Eights. Virginia also won the 1980 NIT Championship under Holland’s leadership.

Some notable alumni during his coaching tenure at Virginia include Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson, current Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and all-time Virginia scoring leader Bryant Stith. All three players — including many more from Holland’s career — will be present at the event Saturday.

After leaving the head coach position, Holland would go on to become the athletic director at his alma mater before returning to Charlottesville to hold the same position at Virginia from 1994-2001. The Cavaliers won two national championships during his tenure. Holland then went on to become the athletic director at East Carolina University from 2004-2013 and remained the emeritus athletic director until his passing.
