The Honor Committee convened over Zoom June 7 for its first meeting of the summer. According to the meeting minutes shared with The Cavalier Daily by Genny Freed, Committee chair and rising fourth-year College student, the Committee began with executive reports from the executive Committee members to discuss updates since the end of the semester.
Freed shared events she had attended in the past couple of months, such as a meeting with University President Scott Beardsley prior to finals, and also announced that the Committee is officially full, filling in two previously empty spots in May.
The minutes also highlighted Freed attending L2K with Committee members Cody Scarce, vice chair for the undergraduate community and rising fourth-year College student, and Sahasra Molleti, vice chair for the graduate community and rising third-year Batten student. L2K is a leadership development program hosted by Student Affairs for University students involved in organizational leadership roles. The program is held each summer over a five day period on Grounds.
Annie Linley, vice chair for investigations and rising fourth-year College student, shared with the Committee that there are five cases in investigations — when Committee members determine if a student is accused or not — and 14 cases currently in the informed retraction period — when a student takes responsibility for committing an Honor code violation.
Scarce shared that he is working on finalizing the Hoos Involved page for the coming school year. This is a website in which each CIO has its own page to post events and contact information for their organization, and Freed wrote in a statement to The Cavalier Daily that information about the Honor Committee will also be posted on the website. Further, Molleti discussed creating a standardized event planning process for all of the Committee representatives.
Following the executive reports, the subcommittee heads presented their summaries to the Committee and plans for upcoming initiatives in the Fall 2026 semester.
Samuel Xiong, Community Relations and Diversity Advisory Committee chair and rising fourth-year Education student, shared his updates that the Honor Ambassador Program will be implemented in the Engagements program for first-year College students.
The Engagements are a series of four, quarter-long classes that each first-year College student enrolls in, and the Honor Ambassador Program involves Committee representatives visiting Engagements classes to present on the Honor system. According to the minutes, Xiong is continuing to plan the Ambassador program by reaching out to Engagements professors. He is also coordinating with Contracted Independent Organizations to promote support officer applications within the Committee.
Committee support officers provide support to students navigating Honor proceedings, conduct research of Honor offenses or lead educational programming for the Committee across Grounds, and the Selections and Recruitment subcommittee begins its recruitment process for support officers in mid-August.
The meeting concluded with Committee members discussing potential changes to the Committee’s bylaws. The executive committee shared that they would propose “housekeeping” amendments to the bylaws by fixing wording and making other grammatical and minor changes.
After the public session, the Committee held a closed session for a case processing training and a private Q&A session.
Committee meetings are taking place monthly over the summer, and the next Committee meeting will be held June 28 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. To request access to join, one must request the Zoom link from Freed prior to the meeting time.
