At its weekly meeting Sunday, the Honor Committee announced their theme for Honor Week, which will be held in February. Genny Freed, Committee chair and fourth-year College student, and Pippa Harris, vice chair for operations and fourth-year Engineering student, announced this year’s theme “Honor Beyond.” The Committee also discussed finalizing the fall semester's Support Officer recruitment cycle, which concluded Sunday.
According to Freed, the Committee selected “Honor Beyond” as this year's theme to help convey to the University community that the Committee extends beyond a punitive organization that sanctions students for honor violations, and is also an organization focused on strengthening the University community under the honor code.
“Our idea was [to really have] an emphasis on honor beyond the classroom, beyond [a] reputation of … punishment and investigating students, … as well as honor beyond your time at U.Va.,” Harris said. “So really emphasizing that honor is so much more than students [may believe].”
Honor Week is a series of events hosted by the Committee in February with the goal of promoting direct student engagement with the pillars of honor. During the 2025-26 academic year, the theme was “Walk with Honor, Lead to Serve” and the Committee held events such as a debate between the Jefferson Society and Washington Society, an honor and athletics dinner and an honor and artificial intelligence discussion about academic integrity with AI usage.
Sunday, both Freed and Harris discussed that the “Honor Beyond” theme would entail outer space graphics and marketing, to symbolize the broad influence that the Committee has on the University community and student life.
Following the announcement of the theme of Honor Week, Cody Scarce, vice chair for the undergraduate community and fourth-year College student, discussed the fall semester's Support Officer recruitment cycle. Support officers include Advisors, Investigator/Counsels and Educators who aim to support students through the Committee’s sanctioning process and educate the University community about the Honor System.
According to Scarce, the Committee had already received contact information from 446 students interested in receiving more information about the Committee throughout the Support Officer recruitment cycle. Students were able register their email to a listserv, which would automatically sign them up for Committee application reminders. Students may have registered their emails at outreach events such as ice cream at Observatory Hill, tabling at the Student Activities fair or through the Committee’s website.
The Committee will notify students if they were selected for an interview Saturday and interviews will be conducted Sept. 14-18. Final selections will be announced after a closed Committee meeting Sept. 20.
The next Committee meeting will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in Newcomb Hall 480. Students or organizations interested in joining via Zoom must request a link from the Committee chair prior to the meeting time.
