Whenever you are hosting an event or party, the first rule is not to run out of food. Unfortunately, the owners of L'Avventura Restaurant forget this rule every once in awhile. Adjacent to Vinegar Hill Theatre on Market Street, the blonde wood interior and sharply angled dining area provide a modern setting for an elegant dinner while the kitchen provides a modern interpretation of classical Italian cuisine. Its location and atmosphere cater perfectly to an evening on the Downtown Mall or a trip to the cinema. Both times we have dined at L'Avventura, however, they have run out of several different menu options. Since their selection is not especially large, running out of items leaves gaping holes in the menu. This can be frustrating since their food is so good.

When a small businessman decides where to open a new establishment, he scopes out the area to make sure there's room for him in the market. Fortunately for us all, there appears to be no saturation level for Charlottesville.

All right, we're not saying that spending an evening at Palladio Restaurant at Barboursville Vineyards is going to be cheap. But we are saying it might possibly be the nicest meal you will have the privilege of eating during your time in Charlottesville.

P rior to our dinner Monday night, "Sweetbones" was merely a term of endearment we reserved for one another. Now, we realize the word carries with it so much more. For those hard-core BBQ fans who have had more than their fair share of free Big Jim's, a short trip to Pantops Center reveals an alternate venuefor hearty smoked Southern fare.

Dining at Monsoon is not as dangerous as the name may suggest, but the restaurant certainly provides a bit of excitement and the menu unleashes a storm of spice. Tucked in a stone house just off the Downtown Mall on Market Street, the Thai restaurant presents its high-level Asian cuisine in a chic setting.

Over near the 900 block of Preston Avenue, the area has recently turned into fertile ground for new restaurants and food stores. Just this past year, Sticks Kabob shop, Mona Lisa's takeout pasta store and the Mexican restaurant El Gir also all have opened.

It would be difficult to imagine an Italian restaurant with a better atmosphere than Vivace. Twinkling white holiday lights, a cozy outdoor patio with an ivy trellis overhead and walls inside covered with sulking photographs of Sophia Loren and large oil paintings of Italian seascapes. The blend of low lighting and Ole Blue Eyes singing in the background combines for a lovely and inescapably romantic dinner out.

Nestled in a romantic Ruckersville shopping center, beyond the Bamboo House, between an antique store and a veterinary clinic, you will find Jody. Jody is not at the Blue Ridge Cafe every waking moment, but it's worth the gamble to drive out there because Jody is the greatest waiter on earth. Attentive but not clingy, fast and friendly, he even followed us out to the parking lot with our forgotten leftovers.

The Thai 99 of old offered a dimly lit, cozy but slow dining experience in what felt like someone's living room. But no longer!

Two people standing in different areas inside Rapture would never know they were inside the same establishment. This restaurant on the Downtown Mall cannot quite make up its mind on what sort of personality it should express. The separate components of this college dining experience need to be considered individually, but what makes Rapture impressive is the unique flair of their combination.

Whether you are searching for a dining location for a large group or a cozy spot for your next romantic dinner for two, Rococo's, an upscale Italian restaurant off Hydraulic Road, offers the perfect environment.

A place called the Tea Room Cafe conjures images of white linen table cloths, dainty cucumber sandwiches and snooty waiters. Breaches of table etiquette are sure to be punished with disdainful scowls and haughty fingers pointed toward the door. Yet the establishment on West Main Street is a warm and inviting place for lunch or dinner and manages to avoid being self-consciously prissy.
