On most weekday afternoons a few people can be seen scattered along the brick walk of the Downtown Mall. Past the statues, fountains and numerous shops and restaurants, quiet and still during the week, lies the amphitheater. Those who venture far enough down the mall to see it on a normal weekday may wonder what it is used for, or why it is even there. This, however, is not the case on Fridays.

Yesterday, members of the secret Z society painted two of their Zs black, leaving a statement explaining their actions and a famous quote about persecution nearby. The symbols, which can be found on the steps leading into Old Cabell Hall and Madison Hall, drew attention from passers-by throughout the day.

Tunnelers say that graffiti splatters the curved steel walls from ceiling to floor. Scrawled in orange and red spray paint - and readable only with a flashlight - sayings like "Satan lives here" line the inside of the University's steam tunnels. "To Football Stadium," with accompanying arrows, points explorers to Scott Stadium.

In the harsh light of a small classroom on Cabell's third floor, 15 people are hard at work trying to piece together a scene for their upcoming performance. The desks are pushed to the back of the room and the small area that remains in the front suddenly becomes a stage. In this space, the 12 members of the cast of "Voices of the Class" work alongside the producer, fourth-year College student Rob Walker, and co-directors, fourth-year College student Katherine Goktepe and fourth-year College student Gretchen Downey, to rehearse for the fifth annual performance.

The music began. Students stood in amazement and watched as third-year Architecture student Christian Ryan and third-year College student Kimberly Myers demonstrated the techniques that will be taught in their prep step class. With flips, twirls and dips, the two look like they are performing a well-rehearsed, choreographed routine. "Oohs" and "ahs" can be heard all around the room.
