A toned-down "Sex and the City" meets the University tonight at the premiere of this year's new programming for HooTV.
The many people who came together to produce one of the newest HooTV shows attempt to bring viewers into the lives of four fictional University students through a new soap series, "Wahoo Sisterhood."
The account of the experiences of Riley, Winter, Savannah and Sydney, the main characters of "Sisterhood," is a first for HooTV. Its creators, fourth-year Engineering student Libby Jones and fourth-year College student Audra Little, developed what they hope will be a popular alternative to the constant string of ITC commercials on channel 13.
"We wanted to do a show that reflected U.Va. life that was light and fun and could appeal to pretty much everyone," Jones said. "It's a comedy about college life; about four best girl friends and all they go through."
"Sisterhood," along with four other HooTV shows, will be premiering tonight in Newcomb Theater. Each of the shows is 30 minutes long.
The creators of "Sisterhood" have encountered several obstacles in bringing the show to tonight's premiere. Many members of the cast and crew have come and gone since the show's initial attempts to get off the ground in September. The second episode, which currently is filming, features a few completely different actresses portraying the main characters.
"Nobody had ever done this before, so we were all learning as we went along," Jones said. "It's just really hard to get together and put together a scripted series. There are a lot of actors involved, and locations, and we tried to be perfectionists, which just isn't possible."
The second episode is scheduled to premiere after Spring Break. A third episode also is in the works.
The premiere will be held tonight in Newcomb Theater at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free.
