Odds & Ends

With elections for the major University leadership positions wrapping up, many officers-elect are planning for next year by coordinating fellow students to aid them with organizational and logistical issues.

Among these planners are upcoming fourth-year class president, third-year College student Justin Ferira, and upcoming fourth-year vice president, third-year Commerce student Alicia Corbin. This week the selection process begins for new trustees to assist with the organization of the class of 2004.

According to Ferira, past trustees have worked on a variety of events, including class dinners, resume workshops, graduation festivities, the Lighting of the Lawn and nights on the Corner.

Ferira encourages students from every walk of University life to apply.

"We want the trustee's board to be a 'networking machine,'" Ferira said. "By that, I don't mean we want 45 politicos. Basically, we need to touch every corner" of the University.

Ferira and Corbin will sort through the applications after the deadline tomorrow.

"We're going to take around 150 applications and narrow it down to 70 for interviews, which will be held the week we get back," said Ferira. "Then they will be narrowed down to the 45 or 50 that will become trustees."

These trustees will represent the entire fourth year class and its interests and concerns.

"I'm looking for an overall diversity, students who have a hand in different areas in the University," Corbin said.

"Overall, we're looking for people that are willing to commit their time and make the fourth-year experience the best it can be."

According to Ferira and Corbin, serving as a trustee is a worthwhile experience.

"It's the greatest way to give back to the University in terms of planning events for the class of 2004," Corbin said. "You get an invaluable experience in terms of being able to shape that last and most memorable year here at the University."

Applications for fourth-year trustees can be submitted to Alumni hall and are available on the Web at: http://www.alumni.virginia.edu/student/trusteeapp.asp

Those interested in applying should do so before noon on Thursday, Feb. 27.
