THE ONLY reason I'm writing this is because three and a half years ago, I got cut from the U.Va. Club Water Polo team. I gave it my all, and if the coach had been a little more sympathetic, I'd probably be finishing up my fourth year as a slighly less than mediocre water polo player.

THE OPINION section of any newspaper, collegiate or professional, is unique within the rest of the paper because of its subjectivity. However, there is a difference between the bias and partiality of a writer and the objectivity of an editor on the opinion page. At The Cornell Daily Sun, the latter has come under fire by a conservative who claims that his views are being censored by the liberal editors of the opinion section.

FORGET the War on Terrorism or the War on Drugs. Recently, the federal government has come up with a revolutionary new concept: the War on Fat.

GOLF: THE gentleman's game. There are many who want to keep it that way - not so much the "gentleman" part as the "man" part. The defense for keeping golf a "man's game" for the sake of tradition is ridiculous, and the arguments made by those who defend sexist policies are absurd.

THE ENGINEERING School owes me one year of my life back. That's how I see it, at least. I spent my entire first year immersed in classes ranging from Material Science to Computer Science. The highest grade my entire first year was a "B," earned in Technology, Culture and Communication 101 - arguably, the Engineering School class that has the least to do with engineering.

WITH THE Supreme Court's ruling in favor of the Cleveland school voucher system, conservatives are crying a victory for allowing families to "choose" their education. The reality of the situation, however is that there is very little choice for these students and the system as it is now is grossly and inherently biased toward religious schools.

BOTH CONSERVATIVES and liberals have been trying to politicize the molestation scandal surrounding the Catholic Church. Many in the former category accuse the church's hard-line policies on sexuality and celibacy in the priesthood as being at fault. On the other hand, many conservatives have pointed out that because the majority of boys molested have been pubescent, and not pre-pubescent, that this is a case of homosexual rape and not pedophilia.

WE'VE ALL heard them. Internet rumors and urban legends about the Sept. 11 attacks have spread like wildfire, with new ones springing up even to this day. Some have been true, like the tales of American and United Airlines' stocks plummeting the week before Sept. 11. But most - from the photo taken from the WTC observation deck seconds before the first plane hit to the allegation that CNN used old footage of Palestinians celebrating - have been completely false.

IT SHOULD be referred to as "The un-scandal." Conservatives endlessly berated the Clinton administration for allegedly vandalizing executive offices before the presidential transition in January 2001. However, a 220-page General Accounting Office report - commissioned by staunch Clinton foe Rep. Bob Barr (R-Ga.), and released last week - found that there was very little evidence of vandalism and deliberate damage done to the offices. But through the way they've handled the "scandal," the media and the Bush administration already have indoctrinated Clinton's guilt into the minds of Americans, regardless of the facts.

MOST MINORITY groups around Grounds - especially black and minority Greek organizations - get a bum rap for self-segregation. Never having seen institutionalized racism or discrimination, it's difficult for students our age to see why black and minority fraternities and sororities even exist anymore. But looking at the reasons behind the existence of such organizations, it's clear that the University needs these groups - and that they cause much less self-segregation than many think.

GET READY, out-of-staters, here it comes again. Assuming they go along with the General Assembly, the administration will be going to the Board of Visitors April 5 to ask for a 5 percent increase in in-state tuition and an 8 percent increase in out-of-state tuition. The Board should not approve an undergraduate tuition increase that unfairly places the brunt of the University's financial burden squarely on the shoulders of out-of-state students.

IT'S VALENTINE'S day, which means that there's one thing on everyone's mind: hate crimes. Yes, David Duke, the former ringleader of the Ku Klux Kircus and now president of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), was in town last week, protesting the refusal of local officials to proceed with hate crimes charges for a group of blacks accused of targeting whites.

HOW DOES one justify using race as a factor in University admissions? Many good-hearted liberals have pondered this question, hoping to find some justification for a practice that apparently promotes equality through racial favoritism. Similarly, many conservatives like to assert that this system is unnecessary because we now live in a society that is colorblind, at least in terms of the law.

THE BIBLE condemns homosexuality, doesn't it? According to most conservative Christian leaders, it does. Most of these political and religious figures, from Jerry Falwell to Gary Bauer agree: The Bible is clear; homosexuality is wrong.

CHRISTMAS is the time when the Lord sent his son, Jesus Christ, down from Heaven to live among us. But unfortunately, around the same time every year, Satan also sends his own minions up to torment the living.

IN THEIR never-ending quest for victimhood, conservative Christians are yelling persecution. This time, it's over the New York City public school system allowing Muslim students to accommodate their schedules to pray during Ramadan.

RACE IS one of the biggest issues on Grounds today. From self-segregation to affirmative action, from stereotyping to multiculturalism, it is a rare moment when the University is silent about race and diversity.

IF PEOPLE want to give their money to the government, we should let them. The proposed tax referendum for Northern Virginia has become the dominant theme in Virginia's gubernatorial campaign recently, with Mark Earley (R) coming out strongly opposed to the idea and Mark Warner (D) defending his support of the proposal.

EVERYONE agrees that censorship is bad. Six weeks after the terrorist attacks, everyone agrees that suppression of speech is getting out of hand. But what no one can agree on is whose speech is getting suppressed.
