It took five minutes longer than usual, but the Virginia men's basketball team defeated Florida State, 76-67, in overtime to give the Cavaliers their first ACC win of the season in thrilling fashion. Virginia improves to 11-4, 1-3 ACC while the Seminoles fall to 12-5, 1-3 on the year.

Two games into the ACC schedule and two losses closer to missing the NCAA tournament for a third straight year, Virginia is not looking quite as good as people had hoped for before the season began. The reason for this is not quite so simple as it might look to most regular basketball enthusiasts who follow their favorite teams religiously.

CARY, N.C. -- On a windy but beautiful night at the pristine SAS stadium in Cary, N.C. the Virginia men's soccer team held the fate of the rest of their season in their own hands when the No. 3 seeded Cavaliers took on the No. 6 Tigers. A win would have brought them to .500 on the year and keep their NCAA hopes alive, while a loss had the potential to end their season entirely, finishing two games below .500.

In Lexington, Kentucky, the Virginia's women's golf team finished in seventh place, after shooting a 326 (+38) in the final round, at the Wildcat Fall Invitational. With an overall total of 926, Vanderbilt took home the championship title, followed by Mississippi St. with 941 strokes. Freshman Sally Shonk led Virginia overall, shooting a 236 (+20), finishing tied for 13th overall.

On Aug. 28, the Virginia men's soccer team faced Seton Hall in its home and season opener at Klöckner Stadium. In that game, three true freshmen made their first collegiate start for the Cavaliers -- forward Adam Cristman, midfielder Will Hall and goalkeeper Ryan Best. Despite Virginia's loss on the field, this trio of talented new-comers, led by Best, emerged as mainstays in the starting 11.

On a cold and rainy afternoon last November in Scott Stadium, NC State had the ball at Virginia's 15, fourth-and-seven, with 25 ticks left on the clock and trailing 14-9. Wolfpack star quarterback Philip Rivers dropped back to pass and lofted a desperation heave that appeared to have found the hands of NC State's Bryan Peterson in the back of the end zone.

The Virginia men's soccer team (1-3) defeated American (1-2-1), 1-0, Friday, but succumbed to a 4-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA Sunday in the Maryland/adidas Classic. In the first game of the tournament, Virginia freshman Adam Cristman recorded his first career goal in the first ten minutes of the opening half, holding on for the 1-0 win over American.
