VILLANOVA, Pa. -- After shooting lights out three days ago, the Cavaliers couldn't flip the switch back on Saturday, as a poor shooting performance led to a 73-63 defeat at the hands of Villanova in the second round of the NIT.

As his team took the court in their opening game of the NIT tournament, Virginia coach Pete Gillen probably wondered what type of effort he would get from his team. He's seen his team mail in a haphazard effort in 2002 in a 74-67 home loss to South Carolina and he's seen them pull out an 89-73 home victory over Brown in 2003. When it comes time to tip it off and start a game in the NIT, you never really know what kind of performance you'll see out of a team. Will they just go through the motions, or will the team positively respond to the chance at winning meaningful post-season games? Thankfully for Gillen, against George Washington, it was the latter. Virginia stepped up to the plate in their opening round game of the NIT tournament, beating the Colonials, 79-66.

On a night that marked the departure of seniors Todd Billet and Majestic Mapp, it was the other co-captain whose star shone brightest in Virginia's 84-82 victory over No. 11 Wake Forest. Junior Devin Smith's baseline drive and freethrow propelled the Cavaliers (16-10, 6-9 ACC) to the upset victory over the Demon Deacons (19-7,9-6).

The date: Dec. 21, 2002. The place: the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The game was billed as Virginia versus Rutgers, but that wasn't the real story. The real story was the return of Todd Billet to the school he played two years for. Thousands of incensed fans sported "BILLET SUCKS" t-shirts and booed furiously every time he touched the ball.

If you look really closely you can see it. Or at least you can see the beginnings of it. The last three weeks have marked a change with the Virginia men's basketball team. No one has slimmed down, bulked up or healed up. This change is bigger than physical. The last five games have marked a change in the attitude of the Virginia Cavaliers. Over the stretch, Virginia has developed a confidence that has had positive results on the hardwood. For the Cavaliers, this new attitude has led to the realization that there's still a lot of basketball left to be played this season.

I could think of some clever lead or I can just flat out say it: Todd Billet is the best clutch shooter that I have ever seen. For the third time in the last four games, the senior guard connected on a game winning three-point basket to propel Virginia to victory. This time, targeting North Carolina as the victim of his heroics, Billet connected from long range to give Virginia a 74-72 lead with 10 seconds left. With the bucket, Billet added another notch to his belt that already includes game winning shots against Georgia Tech and Clemson.

I'm glad I was there. Not only did I see Todd Billet drill what was possibly the biggest three-pointer of his career. Not only did I see Elton Brown play with unbridled passion and desire in anchoring the paint on both sides of the court. But most importantly, I saw T.J. Bannister's coming-out party.

Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage entered the room. Littlepage never enters the room. Indeed this was a peculiar moment at the post-game press conference following Virginia's loss to N.C. State last Saturday.

Virginia (12-8, 2-7 ACC) and N.C. State (14-5, 7-2) battled neck and neck for the first 15 minutes of Saturday's game, but one blown opportunity by the Cavaliers turned a tied game into a double-digit deficit as the Wolfpack cruised to a 79-63 win.

To say the least, this is a tough one for Virginia to swallow. To call Wednesday evening's matchup with Maryland a big game would be an understatement. This was a game circled on the calendars of both the Cavaliers and the Terrapins. This one meant the difference between conference cellar-dweller and contender. This wasn't a big game. This was the game.

He was there, but he wasn't really there. His number two jersey was on his back as he ran up and down the court, but he would tell you himself that he wasn't really playing basketball.

Love him or hate him, there's just no getting away from Virginia basketball coach Pete Gillen. After a less than inspiring start to the conference season, the job security of the besieged Brooklynite has overshadowed many of the real issues surrounding the Virginia men's basketball team. The play of many key Cavaliers has been overlooked in all of the constant "fire Gillen" banter. Squabbling over Gillen's future in the middle of this very young conference season accomplishes nothing. All that it does is cast a cloud over the program and divert attention away from the student-athletes that play the game.

Once the big man on campus, former Virginia basketball standout Roger Mason Jr. has taken his game to the next level with the NBA's Chicago Bulls. The Lawn, Little Johns and finals have been replaced with the Sears Tower, meal money and the pressure to prove that he belongs.

While the hot summer months represent the off season in the basketball world, there certainly isn't any time off for the Cavaliers. In order to reverse a two year skid, the work starts now.

There is a man, but you can barely see him. Hidden behind phonebook-sized folders, this man juggles more in a day than many do in a week. Even when he's not engulfed by paperwork you can barely see him, but don't worry, he's there. Beyond every touchdown pass thrown by Matt Schuab, every crossover dribble from Majestic Mapp, every goal scored by Lindsay Gusick, there is a man that steers the course in making athletics at the University of Virginia great. That man is Virginia Athletic Director Craig Littlepage.

With a new stadium and a solid core of talent, the Virginia baseball program may have added the final piece of the puzzle by naming Brian O'Connor, the associate head baseball coach at the University of Notre Dame, the new head baseball coach of the Cavaliers. O'Connor comes to Charlottesville after nine years on the coaching staff of the Fighting Irish.

After all the conference calls, the press conferences, and legal issues, become just a memory; the Atlantic Coast Conference will enjoy the fruits of its labor. With Hurricanes and Hookies possibly bringing lucrative television contracts and football championship games, the future of the conference looks bright.
