On the corner of Garth Road and Free Union Road sits Hunt Country Market & Deli — a store that combines gourmet food options with a sandwich shop and gas station. Owned by Charlottesville local Nancy Kallander and often staffed by her children — Ben Smith and Carrie Smith — Hunt Country Market has been a favorite of Charlottesville residents since its opening in 2003. Whether you are craving a home cooked meal, or a fresh deli sandwich, Hunt Country Market is a fantastic option for local grub.

Luce is a cozy, hole-in-the-wall window to order fresh Italian pasta right off the Downtown Mall. I heard about Luce through some friends at the University who only had amazing things to say. Charlottesville has local takeout food options that hit almost every category such as Brazos Tacos, Roots’ salads, Bodo's Bagels, The Flat‘s crepes and more. However, a restaurant that specializes in takeout Italian pasta hadn’t existed as a local, affordable and easy meal option before Luce opened.

As the months get a little colder, warm treats like pumpkin bread, cookies, apple cider donuts and pie all begin to sound even more appealing. One of the most comforting and delicious desserts is banana bread. The thing about banana bread, though, is that it can either go very wrong or very right. I have had banana bread that was either too plain, too soggy or verging on burnt.

Sitting amidst the eccentric sculptures and activity of IX Art Park, Brazos Tacos pulses with the chatter of children, students and parents every weekend. Brazos is a taco shop that sells Austin, Texas-inspired tacos and margaritas in a hip, casual location. A fan-favorite for many residents of Charlottesville, Brazos is affordable, local and delicious.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, approximately 65 percent of the international population is lactose intolerant, and many other people are choosing to cut dairy out of their diets for other health reasons. With choices such as almond milk, soy milk and oat milk now available, substitutes for dairy milk are all the rage. Restaurants and coffee shops are more accommodating today for dairy-free customers than ever before.

College students love brunch. There is nothing like waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and heading to a favorite brunch spot with a group of friends. Charlottesville has plenty of standout spots, including Fig, The Virginian and The Villa. This past spring, Charlottesville was gifted its very own First Watch restaurant, a healthy brunch chain. Its convenient location, amiable atmosphere, reasonable pricing and diverse appeal are reasons why First Watch should be added to all brunch bucket lists.

Charlottesville has many options for ethnic restaurants if you are trying to branch out from the usual American cuisine. After seeing it many times outside of the Downtown Mall, I decided to finally stop at Sultan Kebab to satisfy my pita bread and grilled chicken cravings.

Wherever you’re venturing off to this spring break, there are sure to be some staple foods you must try. After all, trying new restaurants and dishes is probably one of the best parts about traveling. Whether you will be roughing it in Joshua Tree National Park on an Alternative Spring Break trip or laying on the beaches of Cancun, you must knock a new food off your bucket list before you come back to the University.

Especially for college students, protein bars are without a doubt one of the most convenient ways to squeeze in some nutrients when your schedule just doesn’t allow a lunch break. As a big fan of protein bars myself, I have tried quite a few and have found the musts and the busts in the world of protein bars. Despite alluring packaging and deceivingly low calorie counts, many bars sneak in added sugar and loads of other junk. There are hundreds of options for easy protein bars, but among the options, there are some clear winners and losers.

New Year’s resolutions — everyone’s favorite way to reinvent their lives and convince themselves that this year they will stop binging those Goldfish at 1 a.m. and go to the gym every day. Whether your New Year’s resolutions last two days or a lifetime, we can all at least tell ourselves it is the effort that counts.

As the cold, dull Virginia winter approaches, it always seems that coffee, soup and any warm, cozy foods taste exponentially better. I always find myself craving pho in the winter as a light and comforting option for lunch or dinner. Around the University, Kuma and Got Dumplings on the Corner are both popular and conveniently located options for ramen and pho bowls. I’ve tried many different spots around Charlottesville in search for the perfect pho, and I can confidently say Thai Cuisine & Noodle House is the best I have tried.

In the world of bowls, Mediterranean is becoming the new Mexican. Charlottesville now has two destinations serving up Mediterranean food in this form — Cava and Mezeh, both within two miles of each other. This proximity could lead to a battle of the bowls, potentially resulting in only one survivor. Although I have been a big Mezeh fan since it came to Charlottesville in 2016, the recent opening of Cava this past summer has made me rethink my preferences. Ultimately, my vote goes to Cava.
