The notorious holiday of Cinco de Mayo is coming up on Wednesday, and I have a bone to pick with it. Soon enough, there will be gaudy sombreros and fake moustaches lining the shelves of party stores as we near this ridiculous holiday.

I think it is safe to say that for many of us, our college experience has been anything but “normal” for over a year now due to the pandemic. For about two weeks now, my days have been even more abnormal — not because of the pandemic, but because of a concussion. Here’s a look into how it’s been…

On June 2, 2020, I vividly remember calling my friend to discuss #BlackoutTuesday on a quarantine walk, making my way through the neighborhood trail with the Virginia humidity hanging thickly in the summer air. She reposted the black square — I had not. #BlackoutTuesday was a form of collective support for Black Lives Matter organized within the music industry, calling for the industry to halt business and contemplate its contributions to racism. Since I had never posted anything related to social justice before, it felt performative to start now. I was unsure of exactly what made me so uneasy, but seeing people who let racist comments slide in high school conveniently repost a black square was upsetting. She agreed, but pointed out the importance of showing solidarity and raising awareness, especially given that neither of us would be able to attend the Black Lives Matter protests given COVID-19 concerns. We both hung up slightly doubting our separate decisions.

There is nothing on this Earth worse for a student or writer than suffering from writer's block. It is an infuriating infliction that can last from minutes to years. I suffered a writer’s block that lasted two years — or at least I have given myself the perception that I escaped. The winters were long and harsh, and my Google document page was as blank as my brain.

Poet William Butler Yeats once wrote, “I know that I shall meet my fate / Somewhere among the clouds above." While these words were written in a poem about the late Major Robert Gregory who served as an Irish aviator, I sometimes feel as if they were written for me because of how much comfort I find in them. You may be wondering how a 19-year-old girl could find solace in a poem like this — to that, I invite you to take a look at my love for clouds.

I am a graduate of the University’s School of Architecture, Master of Architecture 2007 and Master of Landscape Architecture 2008, and I majored in Sculpture at VCU, BFA 1993. Space and the physical world matter to me — and justice matters too. I am opposed to the proposal — recently approved by the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Visitors on the recommendation of the Naming and Memorials Committee — to provide only “digital contextualization” for the University’s statues and memorials.

I cannot believe that my days in Charlottesville are numbered. It is surreal to me to think I will be packing up my apartment — headed for home — in just a few weeks. As much as I don’t want to leave the University, I must prepare for the “real world,” as adults so regretfully call it.

The Queer Student Union ran its annual Drag Bingo event virtually Friday evening. The event, which is one of the main fundraising events for the club, had to be canceled last year after the University moved classes online in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
