I attended both preseason men's basketball games and the Mount St. Mary's and High Point games. No, I don't think I should be awarded a medal for this, but I know it is a rather unique claim. How can I be so sure of this? Well, in those four games the student section of U-Hall seemingly maxed out at 10.

Today will be the first of a series of articles looking at the choice to go to medical school. What I hope to offer is a few simple observations as I look back on the process that I went through to become a doctor and maybe even offer a little advice. In upcoming articles, I will discuss the results of my informal survey to my friends in their first year of residency.

FOR THOUSANDS of years, marriage between a woman and a man has been a bedrock of civilization with cultural, legal, religious and historical underpinnings that provide the foundation for society's most basic social unit: the family. Recently, though, the institution has come under attack, most notably last week when four judicial activists on the Massachusetts State Supreme Court struck down that state's ban on gay marriages as unconstitutional. The decision was both poor and erroneous and left many unanswered questions about gay rights and the role of the judiciary in shaping public policy.

The most accessible drink at fraternity parties, without a doubt, is beer. However, there is currently a push to mandate the presence water coolers alongside the beer line at these parties. This initiative, led by ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team), would provide fraternities with a water cooler. In order for this to be made mandatory, it would have to be approved by the IFC Presidents' Council. Inter-Fraternity Council President Ryan Ewalt has indicated his support for this initiative, and he presented the idea to both the Presidents' Council and the Executive Board of the IFC.

BLAME it on Yankee ignorance. Look at it as a slight resurgence of that "Northern aggression," whose war by the same name still echoes sometimes here through the valleys in this vibrant land south of Maryland (you Northern Virginians, try as you might, are not technically excluded). Yes, the Yankees are still at it, determined to arrogantly perpetuate the stereotypes of those ignorant, racist, backward Southerners. While pernicious anti-Southern bias is nothing new, CBS has taken up the lead to bring humiliation of the South to a new low. "The Real Beverly Hillbillies" concept, currently under development by CBS, is simple: transplant a poor, rural, "hillbilly" family from its home in the backwoods to a Hollywood mansion. Slap on a reality-TV production crew and once the cameras roll, let the humiliation begin. CBS scouts have been sent exclusively to Southern states for their "hick hunt," and one can only imagine that if this despicable excuse for entertainment is allowed to air, we'll all be treated to yet more of the same old tired Southern stereotypes. But this isn't merely CBS's faux pas -- the offensive and ignorant prejudgments of the South permeate our whole culture. The South is constantly misrepresented, and it's time people understood that the prevalent anti-Dixie bias is irrational and ultimately undeserved.
