The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the ACC Championships at Lannigan Field this past weekend. Entering the competition, the Virginia men ranked first in the ACC, while the Virginia women ranked third behind Florida State and Miami. Over the course of three days, the men — led by ACC Field MVP junior Jordan Scott — captured six ACC titles and 16 All-ACC honors to become the conference runner-ups with 117 points. The women concluded the competition in third place with three ACC titles and 12 All-ACC honors.

After only dropping one match through the first and second rounds of NCAA Tournament play, the No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team (24-4, 10-2 ACC) hosted the Charlottesville Super Regional against No. 12 Stanford (19-7, 5-3 Pac-12) Saturday. The Cavaliers last faced the Cardinals in their first match of the 2019 ITA Men’s Team Indoor Championship in Chicago, where Virginia emerged victorious 4-2.

Fresh off of winning the ACC Tournament, the third-seeded Virginia men’s lacrosse team will meet Robert Morris Saturday in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Cavaliers (13-3, 3-1 ACC) and the Colonials (9-7, 4-2 NEC) will face off at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville with a 7:30 p.m. start time.

Senior thrower Hilmar Jonsson has competed at an elite level since he first came to Virginia. Jonsson was ACC Champion in the hammer throw in his first outdoor season with Virginia — spring 2016 — and continued his streak of ACC championship wins in 2017 and 2018. His dominance has extended into the 2019 outdoor season during his senior year. Jonsson recently beat his own school record, in addition to setting Lannigan Field and Icelandic national records with a mark of 75.26 meters at the Virginia Grand Prix. Outside of collegiate competition, Jonsson became the Iceland National Champion in the hammer throw in the summer of 2016.

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted their final meet to conclude the regular season Friday and Saturday at Lannigan Field. The 36-team field at the Virginia Grand Prix gave the Cavaliers an opportunity to put some finishing touches on the season before the ACC Championships.

It takes a dedicated student to drive to Richmond every Thursday night, and members of the University’s climbing team do just that. In addition to a practice on Monday nights at Charlottesville’s Rocky Top gym, the climbing team carpools to Richmond for practices on Thursday nights, often not returning to Grounds until midnight.

This past weekend, No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis (21-4, 10-2 ACC) headed to Cary, N.C., to compete in the ACC Men’s Tennis Championships as the No. 2 seed at Cary Tennis Park. The Cavaliers last won an ACC men’s tennis title in 2017 on their way to their fourth national championship.

Virginia men’s basketball Coach Tony Bennett is often recognized in the college basketball realm for his achievements. He’s a three-time National Coach of the Year and a four-time ACC Coach of the Year, as well as the first coach to lead the team to a National Championship. Bennett also earned recognition in a larger context as he was named to Fortune Magazine’s list of World’s Greatest Leaders April 18.
