Following an off-season dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia football looks to improve on a 2019 season that saw the Cavaliers defeat rival Virginia Tech, win the ACC Coastal division and secure an Orange Bowl appearance. However, this year’s Cavalier squad will look noticeably different from the 2019 team, as Virginia loses stalwarts in quarterback Bryce Perkins, wide receivers Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois, linebacker Jordan Mack and cornerback Bryce Hall to graduation. Along with the changes in the personnel, the Cavaliers’ schedule will also look different. Due to the pandemic, Virginia will play a conference-only 10-game slate that includes challenging road games against Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and Miami.

Due to the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games until next summer, Olympic hopefuls worldwide have had their lives and careers turned upside-down. Both sophomore swimmer Kate Douglass and senior swimmer Paige Madden were looking forward to competing for a spot to represent the United States at the Games this summer, but are now looking to use the extra year to prepare for 2021.

After months of discussion and planning, the ACC Board of Directors announced official plans for all fall sports today. Among other details, the ACC stated that all seven ACC-sponsored fall sports will begin competition the week of Sept. 7.

Following weeks of discussion between football Coach Bronco Mendenhall, Athletics Director Carla Williams and other University leaders, members of the Virginia football team returned to Grounds July 5 for voluntary workouts. While two student-athletes tested positive for COVID-19 out of the 110 tested upon arrival, Williams remains cautiously optimistic about the return of college athletics come September.

Virginia Athletics has had several legendary head coaches throughout its history. From former football Coach George Welsh to former women’s basketball Coach Debbie Ryan, Virginia fans have seen some terrific leadership over the years. However, the Cavaliers’ current coaching staff — spread across 27 varsity sports — represents arguably the greatest collection of head coaches that all happened to be at Virginia at the same time.

Freshman outfielder Chris Newell was named National co-Freshman of the Year by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on June 2. Newell is the first freshman in Virginia history to receive this distinction. Newell was also named to the publication’s Freshman All-American Team alongside teammate and second baseman Max Cotier.

U.S. Lacrosse announced May 21 that Amy Slade, current UMBC Coach and former Virginia lacrosse player, will be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Slade joins seven other inductees this year and will be inducted in a ceremony Oct. 17 in Hunt Valley, Md.

Coach Tony Bennett has had many great teams during his time at Virginia and has coached many great players. Every year has been special, but it is undeniable that the 2013-14 and 2018-19 seasons and teams were particularly memorable.

Virginia Athletics is one of the top college sports programs in the country. In total, Virginia sports teams have won 27 NCAA team championships and 138 ACC titles. The Cavaliers have been particularly successful in the last decade, winning 61 national and conference titles since 2009. The Cavaliers’ recent excellence leads to an interesting question — among Virginia’s 12 team sports, which has been the most successful over the last 10 years?

After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, former Virginia stalwarts quarterback Bryce Perkins and linebacker Jordan Mack signed contracts to join the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers, respectively. The pair join fifth-round draftees wide receiver Joe Reed and cornerback Bryce Hall in the NFL.

After a grueling season filled with numerous highs and lows, the Cavaliers are still seeking glory. It has been exactly one month since the NCAA decided to cancel collegiate wrestling’s national championship and all other championships for both spring and winter sports due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Along with this, Virginia Athletics suspended all athletic activities until further notice. Yet neither of these obstacles are stopping two Virginia star wrestlers in junior Jay Aiello and senior Jack Mueller.

I was 13 when I saw my first collegiate polo match. I had only recently begun playing the sport and still had my reservations about a game so different from anything I had played in the past, but that match changed everything. It was the women’s semi-finals — Virginia against Cornell — and I had never seen anything like it. The women scored from the middle of the arena and played with more intensity than I had ever witnessed — from that day, I was determined to play on the Virginia women’s polo team.

As many Virginia fans can attest, on-field success has been a staple of Virginia Athletics in part due to the high standards student-athletes at the University are held to on and off the field. These standards of excellence have materialized into 27 NCAA championships and are a reason why the University is considered to be one of the elite athletic institutions across the U.S.

Two years ago, the University’s club table tennis team had just two active members and the team’s CIO status was frozen. Flash forward to today and the club team now has 100 active members and third-year Engineering student Shirley Zhang qualified this year for the national championships in women’s singles.

In the past year, Virginia Athletics has seen massive success, securing national championships in men’s basketball and lacrosse. Yet this success isn’t just limited to the varsity level. In March, the Virginia Alpine Ski and Snowboard Team experienced a successful run at the USCSA Collegiate National Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of the men’s basketball NCAA national title win. Needless to say, this commemorative day brings about a sense of elation for Virginia fans and a reminder of this joyous occasion. The day of the championship, thousands of students flooded the Corner and the Lawn in celebration. Shouts of pride from John Paul Jones Arena could be heard from over a mile away. It was a rare, unifying event that nearly everyone at the University could revel in.
